Just starting this article but wanted to recommend Wide Sargasso Sea by Jean Rhys if you haven't read it! It is a response to Bronte's book and is told from the perspective of Mr. Rochester's wife, "Bertha." It tackles colonization/imperialism. Interestingly, I actually read WSS first before Jane Eyre so it had a major impact on how I then approached Bronte's writing. When I finally started reading JE, it was so hard to finish because I kind of saw it as a facade, and it in my opinion, made the book less impactful to me though I still understood and appreciated the message.
