I invite you to read my article so you can read my entire argument. beauty standards have historically been placed on women, by men. beauty has throughout history, been a currency and a social standard--it was quite literally a value. Out of the power structure, these standards have been, and still are, intimately linked to the patriarchy--a system that is known to have literally pushed beauty expectations, conformity, and comparisons (along with hypersexualization) on women. The most simple and exact example of this is the history of the corset, something historians have called "a reigning symbol of patriarchal oppression."
